DIYARBAKIR, Turkey, Aug 30 (AFP) - 13h48 - Army experts destroyed a crudely made bomb found in the main city of Turkey's predominantly Kurdish southeast on Monday during ceremonies marking a historic military victory, security forces said.
The bomb, comprising three hand grenades connected to a mobile telephone, was blown up in a controlled explosion.

The attempted attack targeted "high-level officials and (military) officers," the Diyarbakar governor's office said in a communique.

Security sources said the bomb was found on a major avenue in the city of Diyarbakir several kilometres (miles) from the site of ceremonies marking an army victory over allied Greek, French and Italian forces in 1922, a year before the founding of the Turkish republic.

The thoroughfare along which the bomb was placed is frequently used by local officials, police said.

Officials made no specific reference to the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), now known as KONGRA-GEL, in connection with the bomb, but they have blamed the PKK for two earlier attacks in the region.

On Sunday, 10 soldiers were wounded by a landmine in the province of Sirnak, east of here, and a train driver was injured by a bomb on a rail track in Bingol province, to the north.

The PKK ended a five-year unilateral ceasefire with Ankara on June 1.
