19.05.2004 - BEIRUT, Lebanon - The leader of the Hezbollah guerrilla group on Tuesday accused U.S. forces of desecrating holy shrines in Iraq, and called on Muslims to defend the sanctities in the Iraqi cities of Najaf and Karbala with their lives.

"By attacking holy sites, they are attacking all Muslims and all Shiites worldwide," Sheik Hassan Nasrallah said of the U.S. soldiers fighting militiamen of the radical cleric Muqtada al-Sadr in Najaf and Karbala.

During fighting last weekend, the golden dome of the Iman Ali mosque in Najaf was slightly damaged. It was not clear which side was responsible.

The U.S. military says militiamen have used Muslim holy places in the two cities as firing positions and storerooms for weapons.

"When the issue becomes one of holy sites, there will be no place for anything other than ... great sacrifices and the call of martyrdom," Nasrallah said. He urged supporters to demonstrate on Friday while wearing "martyrdom shrouds" to show their readiness to die.

Hezbollah is listed by Washington as a terrorist organization. It was the umbrella group for Shiite militants who carried suicide bombings and kidnapped Americans in Lebanon in the 1980s.
